Rescheduled Field Trip now Oct 21

Our field study to Hull’s Wood that was originally scheduled for October 8, 2019 has been rescheduled for Monday October 21, 2019.

We do not require students to fill out new Acknowledgment of Risk forms as this was previously done for the original trip. The itinerary for the day remains the same. Please check the weather for this day and ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the day as we will be outside the entire morning.

We are still in need of volunteers for this trip. If you are able to attend, please email Mrs. Pittman or Ms. Fraser.

Thank you!

Field Trip Reminder

Room 15 & 16 Parents,

We are looking forward to our first field study tomorrow, Tuesday October 8, and have a few reminders. The forecast indicates it will be snowing tomorrow. We are going to modify some of our activities due to this but have alternative learning activities planned. Students will need to wear snow pants, boots, hats and mitts as it will be chilly and snowy. We will ask the kids to have snack as soon as they arrive at school instead of at the location so we don't have to eat in the snow and take gloves off.  The bus will leave closer to 9:30 to allow them time to eat. We will also return slightly earlier than planned at approximately 11:45. Taking into account the predictions for snow tomorrow, the conditions appear to be safe for travel and for our planned activities. We will watch the weather closely tonight and tomorrow morning in case this changes.

Today students are bringing home reading books in their folder. These books can be exchanged every Monday for new books. There are some suggestions for reading with your child as well. If you have any questions about home reading, please contact Mrs. Fraser or Mrs. Pittman.

Reminders: Friday is a PD day. No school for students.
Monday is a holiday (so book exchange will be Tuesday)

Class Picture Sketching

Yesterday the boys and girls brought home their class pictures. Before taking them home, the students worked hard to draw a class picture into their white journal. Students looked closely and used what they have been learning about drawing portraits to add important details. Here are some pictures of their hard work.

Superheroes

This morning we imagined what we would look like if we were a superhero! We talked about our superhero name and what our superpower would be. Students then drew a picture of themself as a superhero and wrote two sentences about their special powers.

In math we have been learning how to represent numbers to 10 in different ways. Can your child explain some of the different ways we can show numbers? We have been practicing writing the numeral, drawing a picture, using tally marks, writing a math sentence and using a ten frame.

This afternoon we combined what we have learned about the primary and secondary colours as well as tints and shades to create some brand new colours!

Leafman and Rekenreks

Reminders and Updates: Field trip forms are due by Friday. Home reading will begin on Monday. Your child will be bringing home books and a letter explaining strategies for reading with your child.

This week the students' writing has been based on their Leaf Creature creations. We talked about the importance of both pictures and words to tell a story and the students were challenged to create a WOW picture. Ask your child what makes a WOW picture. They really took their time and lived up to this challenge. Students are working on adding as many letter as they can when sounding out and writing. Some are able to add the first letter they hear (example for 'sun' they write 's.' Others hear beginning and end sound (sun is written 'sn') and others can hear the vowel in the middle. Once they are able to hear 'sun' they are able to write many more words in this word family (run, fun, gun). This is the progression we will see in the students throughout the year.

This week in math the kids have been using rekenreks to represent numbers, and as a tool for problem solving. Todays problem included baking cookings on two levels of the oven. Students are encouraged to show their thinking using pictures and numbers.

Today we used paint to explore tints and shades. Students made a monochromatic colour pallete using either red or blue paint and adding black and white.
